Bixpy Featured in SDVoyager With The Story Behind San Diego's Electric Kayak Motor Company

Bixpy LLC

Bixpy was recently featured in SDVoyager, one of San Diego's leading platforms for spotlighting local entrepreneurs and businesses making a real impact in the community. The feature shines a light on how we came to life, the challenges the company faced along the way, and what makes electric kayak propulsion such a game-changing category for small watercraft. How Bixpy Was Born in a San Diego Garage

After exiting a previous business in 2014, Bixpy founder Houman Nikmanesh found himself spending a lot of time kayaking along the San Diego coastline. Electric bikes and scooters were changing the way people moved on land, but nothing comparable existed for the water. That gap in the market sparked the idea for an electric kayak propulsion system. Working out of his garage alongside a UCSD engineering graduate, Houman began adapting motor and battery technology from the personal mobility world and applying it to small watercraft. What began as a hands-on tinkering project quickly evolved into something much bigger. By late 2017, Bixpy officially launched its first two products: a compact electric propulsion system for kayaks and a diver propulsion vehicle. Those early products marked the beginning of Bixpy as a company and laid the foundation for everything that followed.

Creating a New Category in Electric Watercraft

One of the most defining aspects of Bixpy's journey is that there was no roadmap to follow. There were no direct competitors to benchmark against and no established market to tap into. Building a brand in an entirely new category meant convincing people that electric kayak motors were not only viable but genuinely useful. Today, Bixpy is recognized as one of the pioneers in bringing clean, electric propulsion to small personal watercraft including kayaks, paddleboards, and other compact vessels. The product ecosystem now includes over 30 different adapters, allowing Bixpy motors to integrate seamlessly with a wider range of watercraft than any other brand in the space. That commitment to compatibility and portability is a core part of what sets Bixpy apart.

Overcoming Challenges with COVID, Supply Chain, and Tariffs

The road to building Bixpy has not been without serious obstacles. When COVID hit, sales dropped to zero almost overnight, creating enormous uncertainty for the business. As people turned to outdoor activities and water sports during lockdowns, demand for Bixpy products surged rapidly, which brought a new set of challenges around sourcing components, managing supply chains, and scaling operations under pressure. Since then, the company has continued to navigate inflation, ongoing supply chain disruptions, and tariff pressures. Rather than being slowed down by these hurdles, the Bixpy team has developed the resilience and adaptability needed to keep moving forward and delivering for its customers.

Built Around Community, Not Just Products

At the heart of Bixpy is a genuine commitment to the people who use its products. We take pride in being responsive to customer feedback and developing products that our community actually wants, even when those products are not the most commercially obvious decisions. We refer to our customer base as the Bixpy family, and that sense of community shapes everything from product development to customer support. The goal has never been just to sell a motor. It has been to make time on the water more accessible, more enjoyable, and more efficient for everyone who loves being out there.

The Founder Who Studied Marine Zoology, Not Engineering

Something that surprises many people is that Houman's academic background is in human physiology and marine zoology, not engineering or manufacturing. Bixpy was not built from a traditional technical foundation. It was built from curiosity, a love of the ocean, and a willingness to figure things out along the way. That origin story is a meaningful reminder that you do not always need a conventional background to create something innovative and lasting.
